Just a Gob on a Stick – The Voice Behind the Mic

By Simon Hill

Having commentated on major football games around the world for more than 25 years, English-born Fox Sports commentator and talent Simon Hill has become so much more than what his colleague once described as ‘just a gob on a stick’. It was Simon’s devotion to his beloved Manchester City that led him to follow his passion into a career working as a football presenter and commentator in both radio and television in the UK before moving to Australia, where he has become the voice of ‘the world game’. Simon recounts some of the many memorable football games he has been part of, including the Socceroos beating Uruguay in 2005 to qualify for the World Cup, and then for the excitement of Australia’s first appearance at a World Cup since 1974.  –

Simon Hill’s autobiography is a simple story of a boy from Manchester City. The stories he tells in this book don’t seem to disguise his drive to succeed, he also doesn’t hide anything to m,ake him look better than he is, and it is a tell-all tale of his hard schlep to achieve his success. From critically analysing relationships with his colleagues to his mistakes and consequences, the story is told chronologically from the time he was a twelve year old boy realising he was never going to be a professional footballer. It’s a uniquely personal account of a football career from the other side of the field, and it’s a great read for anyone.
