Guinness World Record attempts aim to raise $100,000 for charity

Losing weight is not the only great thing you can do with a treadmill!

March 2017OUTRUN CANCER, a not-for-profit organisation that encourages people to take action against  cancer,  is  gearing  up  to  break  three  Guinness  World  Records  in  April,  all  in  the  name  of charity.

Taking place on the Technogym stand at the Fitness Show Sydney on Saturday 29 April, OUTRUN CANCER is attempting to break three Guinness World Records for the furthest distances run on a treadmill in 24 hours. The current records that will be attempted to be broken include:

  • Team Male – 12 runners: 400km, 3:10 pace
  • Team Female – 12 runners: 318km, 4:11 pace
  • Individual Male – 1 runner: 261km, 5:31 pace – attempted by Luca Turrini

There will also be a Mixed Team consisting of 48 runners who will be seeing how close they can get to the team World Record distance of 438km.

In addition to the mammoth challenge, OUTRUN CANCER has set a goal to raise $100,000 for Camp Quality, a children’s cancer charity delivering innovative programs and services which develop life skills and strengthen wellbeing in children 0-13 impacted by cancer, whether their own diagnosis, or the diagnosis of someone they love (parent, carer or sibling).

“For those like me, who have kids or are around kids and have happened to visit a hospital and seen children and families that are doing it tough, 24/7, for weeks and months on end, you will know how important it is that they receive the best support possible.  Camp Quality does an amazing job in providing  that  support  and  it  is  a  privilege  to  be  able  to  use  our  passion  to  give  back  and  make someone else’s life a little better,” says Luca Turrini, OUTRUN CANCER Funder and Chief Runner.

The $100,000 raised will support 30 families for one year, giving them access to all of Camp Quality’s programs and services, designed to meet the specific wellbeing needs of children growing up with cancer, and their families, free of charge. This includes family and kids camps, in hospital support through puppets, family liaison coordinators and child life therapists, family fun days, experiencesand  retreats,  and  Camp  Quality’s  Primary  School  Education  Program  which  visits  schools  across Australia to teach kids about cancer.

“I believe when our running community and the public come together, we will achieve something truly incredible. I want to dedicate each hour of my run to a family. If we can visualise what these kids and families are going through every day, I believe we can all endure the pain of the running,” says Turrini.

One person who knows too well about pain and pushing the boundaries is ultra-marathon runner: Pat Farmer.

“I say to people, ‘At least when you are in pain you know you are alive.’ If you don’t think Luca is running fast at 12 kilometres an hour, give it a crack at eight, nine, ten kilometres an hour and you’ll start to see exactly what I’m talking about. For the amount of time Luca is trying to set that record for is truly unbelievable. All of us as human beings have a choice as to whether we exert ourselves or not. The greatest gift is having that choice. This is a serious attack at a world record. It wouldn’t be a world record unless it was tough and it is extremely tough,” says Farmer.

Technogym, the global supplier of fitness and wellness technologies and solutions, is supplying the all-important hardware for the world record attempts, which will be live tracked on the mywellness cloud platform. Four dedicated Technogym Excite treadmills will literary be working around the clock to get Luca, the men’s team, women’s team and mixed team across the finish line.

“We’re very excited to be hosting these Guinness World Record attempts. Technogym has always strived to push the boundaries and test the limits in wellness technologies and solutions, and it is only fitting that we support OUTRUN CANCER and the amazing individuals who are doing the same for charity,” says Claudio Bertozzi, Technogym Australia Country Manager.
