Ski Pulk Through Lapland's Alps
Adventurer François Quiquet plans to travel over 100km, alone and completely independently, through a little known region of Lapland, using skis and backcountry ski pulk (mountaineering sled). Along the way he will attempt an ascent of Kebnekaise (2111 metres), the highest peak in Sweden and part of the Scandinavian Alps, located about 200km north of the Arctic Circle. His trip will follow a trail named the Kungsleden (‘road’ in Swedish), one of the oldest and wildest routes in Europe. Find out more, click on fquiquet.blogspot.com
Paddle Around Australia
When German superwoman Freya Hoffmeister smashed her way around our continent-sized island last year, following in the paddle strokes of Kiwi kayaking legend Paul Caffyn, Outer Edge posed the question: just when is an Australian paddler going to rise to the challenge of circumnavigating our country? Little did we know that one Stuart Trueman was preparing to do just that. Stu set out from Broome on 10 April, and gave himself 16 months to do the 16,000 odd kilometres that would see him come back into the WA beach town in July/August. If successful he will become the first person to complete the circumnavigation unsupported. As we go to print, he’s about to rock up in Melbourne, where we plan to go for a beer with him. Look out for more on this story in future editions of Outer Edges and on our website.

Mike Horn’s four-year youth-orientated expedition, Pangaea, continues its tour de force. Horn recently added an Aussie accent to the crew with the addition of Mark Thompson, a sixteen year old from Cairns. Thompson read about the Pangaea expedition in Outer Edge, applied and spent a few weeks in Switzerland training up. He passed all medicals and found himself joining the boat and fellow young explorers from the Andaman Islands to Calcutta in February. Mike’s expedition still needs more Aussie recruits for the remainder of his journey, which heads overland from India, north to the Himalayas and through Asia. Young people can apply online.
