RECORD NUMBERS FOR WATER POLO QUEENSLAND STATE TITLES

A record number of teams have entered the 2018 Water Polo Queensland State Titles held from 7-13 December at the Sleeman Sports Complex.

With registrations and team lists finalised, 95 teams have confirmed their participation across five age groups, an increase of six teams from the 2017 tournament.

More than 1,130 athletes will compete in 12&U, 14&U, 16&U, 18&U, and 23&U competitions. This year Water Polo Queensland has introduced the 23&U division, which will provide more opportunities for athletes to continue playing water polo once they have left secondary school.

“Our sport continues to grow in Queensland and that is reflected in the record number of teams playing in the 2018 Water Polo Queensland State Titles. With the introduction of the 23&U competition, our athletes can continue playing water polo after they have left secondary school. Continuing to provide a pathway for athletes post-school is a big focus for us and we continue to look at new ways of keeping young adults engaged in our sport.” said Robert Donaghue, Chief Executive Officer, Water Polo Queensland.

25 regional teams have registered to play at this year’s State Titles. The Sunshine Coast will field teams across all age groups with a total of 18 teams entered into the competition, a record number fielded by any club or regional association.

Rockhampton and the Gold Coast will also field teams whilst the smaller regions, such as Mackay, Toowoomba, Townsville, and Cairns, have all had players picked up in the draft.

“Each year we’re seeing more regional athletes participating in water polo and signing up to play with their local association. In turn, these associations are providing more participation opportunities for their young athletes, who get to experience playing against different teams, styles of play, and a higher level of officiating.” added Mel Rippon, Head of Coach and Athlete Development.
