A suicide bomber has injured 12 people, three of them seriously, after blowing himself up near a music festival in Ansbach, Germany. Police say they believe the suspected attacker was a 27-year-old Syrian man who had been denied asylum in Germany. They say he detonated an explosive device outside a bar after being turned away from the music festival.

Germany is on high alert following the shooting near a shopping centre in Munich on Friday in which nine people died and an attack in Reutlingen on Sunday when a man, believed to be a Syrian refugee, killed a woman and attacked two others with a machete.

Following the bombing in Ansbach, the Bavarian interior minister Joachim Herrmann said: “we don’t know if this man planned on suicide or if he had the intention of killing others. Unfortunately, this is a terrible new attack which will surely increase people’s anxiety.”

There have been no travel restrictions to the country but those in the region of Ansbach should follow the advice of local authorities and warns of a “high threat from terrorism”. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in public places visited by foreigners.

The German government has announced that increased security has been put in place as a precaution at public buildings, major events, transport hubs and large public gatherings.
